Healthier Alternatives for Chrissy Teigen’s Favorite Brunch Dishes

Brunch is so delicious it’s tempting to undo that top button and go to town, but who wants to spend the rest of the day with a comfort food hangover? In a quest to sate my inner brunch monster, while staying on the dietary straight and narrow, I did a health-conscious translation of Chrissy Teigen’s brunch-centric foodgrams.

As far as one can glean on Instagram, Teigen keeps it pretty healthy – but she’s not the sort of supermodel who’s afraid to dig in. She’s an avid foodie, cookbook author, and even a brisk scroll through her IG feed will have you salivating.

The Cravings author’s charming, down-to-earth social media persona and second-to-none Internet clapbacks have earned her a special place in my heart. She’s one of my favorite celebrities and certainly doesn’t need feedback on her brunch consumption. So Chrissy, if you find this, please know that this is an exulting of your breakfast choices and ode to the joyous manner in which you share them with us minions. You are a treasure, thank you.

Here’s a guide to savoring the indulgences of Mrs. John Legend (and legend in her own right) by swapping them out with these healthier alternatives:

Quiche

Admittedly, Chrissy’s recipe for a thick-crusted quiche with key ingredients bacon, swiss, cheddar, onion, and spinach looks divine.

But if you’re trying to slim up, keep your cholesterol down, or just generally stay in the healthy zone, you’ll be better off with a lighter option that doesn’t sacrifice taste, like this 110-calorie crustless veggie quiche from Sally’s Baking Addiction.

Breakfast Fried Rice

The main way you can make a fried rice dish healthier is by cooking it at home, which gives you full control over the contents.

Try this recipe featuring Tamari, a type of soy sauce that doesn’t contain any MSG, and only a minimal amount of olive oil for a yummy fried rice that won’t weigh you down.

French Toast

Don’t get me wrong, if John Legend made me French Toast dripping in syrup, I would wolf it down in five seconds flat and ask for seconds. But he hasn’t.

In the meantime, I’ve become obsessed with this trimmed down rendition of the brunch classic, courtesy of Amuse Your Bouche. It maximizes healthiness by using egg whites instead of full eggs and a couple sprays of oil versus “a full glug poured straight from the bottle.”

Scrambled Eggs

Chrissy’s big yellow skillet looks like it’s on its way to Yummyville, but an easy peasy technique for making scrambled eggs healthier by leaving out the yolks. It’s even more effective if you add fibrous, nutrient-rich veggies to the mix.

This egg white scramble with spinach and onions from Nancy Fox’s Skinny Kitchen is a lean, mean alternative to standard scrambled eggs that still packs a flavorful punch.

Bacon

It’s no surprise that Chrissy likes bacon for breakfast – she is human, after all. It’s also no surprise that bacon is not the healthiest food on the planet. However, you can counter much of its criticism by simply replacing it with a baconesque product, such as veggie-based bacon, like tempeh, eggplant, or mushroom, or going with a turkey or duck bacon instead. It’s not clear from her Instagram what kind she’s using, but Teigen does get an A+ in is preparation. Roasting bacon in the oven with no added oil, versus the more common method of frying it, will help the fat content from getting out of hand. Perhaps most important is portion size – you’ll want to keep it limited to a 1-ounce serving.

 

Fruity Pebbles Cereal

Chrissy loves the same high fructose processed cereal that we all do from our childhoods. See, models they’re just like us! However, as sweet as that trip down memory lane can be, we’d be a lot better off without the artificial dyes and flavorings. If you’re jonesing for a fruity cereal fix without the additives, try Annie’s Organic Berry Bunnies as a more wholesome substitute.

Favorite Easy (and Healthy!) Breakfast

Chrissy’s taste is always on-point, but she absolutely nails it with this simple, nutritious breakfast.


This one is such a slamdunk, we don’t even have an alt – just do it exactly like she does from the top down:

  • Fried egg
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Avocado mashed with chili flakes
  • Prosciutto
  • Ezekiel sprouted bread

So that’s how you eat brunch like Chrissy Teigen if you weren’t blessed with the metabolism of a supermodel. Not to mention, these healthier versions are super fun to whip up at home. However, an easy hack for social brunches out with friends is just to stay cognizant of portion control and keep those from getting supersized.
