Some call Valentine’s a “Hallmark holiday” aka one made up just so retailers can put more money in the bank.
And we get it, dining out is pricey, flowers and chocolate add up, jewelry stores seem to market, market, market, and weekend getaways can throw your bank account back.
But, honestly, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can still have a lot of fun on this day with your special someone and not spend a ton. And please note that your “special someone” could be your bff, grandparent, or Mom. It doesn’t have to be a romantic partner.
That being said, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite things to do that won’t break the bank.
12 fun things to do on Valentine’s that are less than $12.
1. Go for a hike or bike ride
Seriously, there’s nothing better than getting outdoors and moving your body.
2. Go for a fancy cup of coffee
Skip the fancy expensive dinner and splurge on a leisurely afternoon with your favorite coffee drink. Think a latte, cappuccino, or maybe even a cup of tea. Use this time to really connect with one another and disconnect from technology aka no phones on the table. You can thank us later.
3. Play the question game
We love deep meaningful conversation. And there’s no better way to do this than by playing the question game. It works by simply asking one another questions back and forth. Anything. Yep, that’s it. Pretty simple, but when you set out to do this, it’s so fun and interesting. You learn things you never would about the person. If you need help thinking what to ask, you can always use this list of questions.
4. Make a healthy pizza together
Grab some pre-made dough, your veggie-heavy toppings, some sauce, and cheese and make a pizza! This is such a fun bonding activity and the results are delish.
5. Play card or board games
We all have games for way back when or a deck of cards. Break them out. It’ll be such a relief from the typical “watch a movie or TV” charade. Plus, you can play the question game while you’re at it and have even more fun!
6. Plan a picnic
Find your local park or hiking grounds, use what you have at home, and make a picnic! Just the experience of doing something new like this together is shown to help bond with another.
7. Go to a museum or aquarium
You can get into most museums or aquariums for $10 or less per person. Why not do it? Break out of your ordinary routine this Valentine’s day to shake things up.
8. Host a potluck
Have a get together at home to save major bucks and make it a potluck. It’ll save you money and food prep, but still allow for a whole lot of laughs.
9. Build a fort
Go old school, way back to your kid days, and build a fort with what you have at home. No doubt: you’ll find yourself cracking up.
10. Make banana pops
Ditch all that sugary candy and buy a bunch of bananas. Once they’re unpeeled, rolled them in natural peanut butter, place them on a cookie sheet topped with parchment paper, and freeze for a few hours. You can cut them up into smaller pieces before freezing, if you like, for smaller portions. And enjoy! Simple, healthy, inexpensive, and fun.
11. Take a luxurious bubble bath
Ditch the super expensive spa and create your own zen environment at home. Your wallet will thank you.
12. Workout together
We’re big believers that couples who sweat together, stay together. Do a gym class together or try something totally new and workout at home. Some of our favorite free workout videos can be found on BeFit’s YouTube channel.
