5 “Healthy” Foods That Are Fooling You

You might be surprised, but your “healthy” snacks pack more calories and sugar than you expect. Many foods try to advertise themselves as healthy these days, but it is important to take a closer look. Check out these surprisingly unhealthy snacks and consider their healthy alternatives.

Granola

You may think that granola is a healthier choice than your morning cereal, but often times it has way more sugar and less fiber than many cereal options. Additionally, many people eat more than the recommended serving size. A healthier option is to choose a fiber-rich cereal and add your own plain roasted nuts.

Orange Juice

The juicing craze lately makes it seem like all juices are healthy, however, they are a source of overloaded sugar. Many packaged juices are heavily processed and contain large amounts of sugar or even high-fructose corn syrup. Try an actual fruit instead for less concentrated sugar and the added bonus of fiber. If you are still looking for a beverage, hint water is a refreshing choice with no sugar or added sweeteners.

Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt seems like the answer to your call for healthy ice cream, but often it is just as unhealthy. A serving of frozen yogurt usually has between 25 and 35 grams of sugar and the toppings add on even more. That beloved fro-yo also does not contain the healthy probiotics associated with yogurt because of the freezing process. Reach for plain Greek yogurt instead and add your favorite fruits and nuts for extra flavor.

Veggie Chips

Veggie chips fool you with their green packaging and pictures of vegetables. In reality, they are pretty much the same as potato chips. They usually contain such small quantities of vegetables that they lack the vitamins and other nutritional values. You can roast your own veggie chips at home in the oven or carefully select veggie chips made with full vegetables.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruits do not share the same health score as their fresh counterparts. The drying process depletes the fruit of many of its vitamins. Additionally, dried fruit usually contains added sugar and preservatives. Next time go for the real deal! Choose fruits with a long shelf life such as apples if you miss the convenience of stocking up on dried fruit.
