5 DIY Natural Hair Masks for Every Type of Hair

DIY Hair Masks

It seems like every day we learn of a new beauty product that we shouldn’t be consuming — especially if you’re pregnant. Avoid sulfates. No parabens. The list goes on. That’s why we’ve collected our favorite recipes for natural DIY hair masks made from home ingredients. Read on to see how you can make these tried-and-true hair smoothie recipes with ingredients you likely have stored in your pantry. Healthy hair awaits!

For Damaged Hair

Repair damaged hair with this incredibly simple recipe that calls for just two ingredients: coconut oil and honey. Coconut oil is believed to promote a well-nourished, healthy scalp and healthy hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles, and protecting hair against breakage and split ends.

*Note: If your hair is dyed a dark color, be careful. Honey can naturally lighten the hair if it’s left on and then exposed to the sun.

Honey and Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

  • 1 tbsp. organic coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. organic raw honey
  • 1 egg yolk

  • shower cap

  • Wash hair.
  • Whisk the ingredients together in a bowl for 1-2 minutes and cook on the stove until warmed through but not hot. Divide mixture into four even quarters.
  • With hair still wet, divide hair into four sections and work the mixture into each section of the hair evenly.
  • Place shower cap on head and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse and wash hair.

For Curly Hair

Out of all the natural DIY hair masks, this recipe is best-suited for heads of curly-hair. The rich combination of yogurt, olive oil, and honey topped off with a dose of vitamin E oil will give your ringlets the healthy dose of moisture they need to remain bouncy and buoyant, not frazzled and frizzy.

Yogurt Olive Oil Hair Smoothie

  • 1 cup of Greek yogurt
  • 2 ½ tbsp. good honey
  • 5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil

  • squirt bottle

  • Mix all ingredients until well-combined.
  • Pour into a squirt bottle and apply generously and evenly to entire head.
  • Let sit for 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

For Dull Hair

We love this mask for bringing dull hair back to life. Fair warning — when this natural DIY hair mask is mixed and applied to the hair… it looks pretty strange. But fret not! Applying this hair mask before your usual washing routine will leave your locks feeling silky smooth and soft as ever.

Avocado Hair Mask

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, strained
  • 1 tsp almond essential oil

  • fork
  • whisk

  • Mash the avocado until as smooth as possible.
  • Gradually whisk in ¼ cup of olive oil, lemon juice, and almond essential oil until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  • Apply an even layer to the hair and let sit for 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and follow with your normal hair-washing routine.

For Kinky Hair

If you have kinky hair, you know how challenging it can be to keep it moisturized but not greasy. In this recipe, the surprising inclusion of mayonnaise works wonders to strike just the right balance. It sounds a bit odd, but this thick, oily condiment is rich in proteins that the hair needs to keep it looking healthy and shiny.

Mayo Hair Treatment

  • 1 avocado, mashed
  • ½ cup organic mayonnaise
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp honey

  • blender
  • shower cap

  • Mix all ingredients in a blender and apply evenly to hair.
  • Cover hair with a shower cap and let sit for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and follow with your normal hair-washing routine.

For Oily Hair

Well, cider vinegar that is. This recipe is just what the doctor ordered to keep naturally oily hair from looking too stringy and unattractive.

Vinegar Hair Mask

  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 lemons, juiced and strained
  • 2 tbs honey

  • fine-mesh sieve

  • Mix all ingredients and combine thoroughly.
  • Strain through a fine-mesh sieve.
  • Pour onto head in the shower.
  • Rinse thoroughly and follow with your normal hair-washing routine.
